Best Summer Foods for Older Adults

Today’s seniors are living longer and better lives than ever before, and that’s largely due to a better understanding of the body’s nutritional needs. To stay as healthy as possible, Home Care Assistance of Lancaster recommends four summertime foods that seniors should include in their diets. They’re also great options for the warmer summer season!


Blueberries are particularly abundant during the summer months because various varieties ripen during this season. These little power plants of goodness can be stirred into oatmeal or pancake batter, sprinkled over frozen yogurt or skim-milk ice cream, baked into muffins, or eaten straight from the box. Blueberries are full of antioxidants that can help guard against cancer and high blood pressure as well as keep immune system functioning well.

Seeds and Nuts

Almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, and sunflower seeds are just a few of the seeds and nuts that are available on seasonal basis. Consuming these items can result in increased cardiovascular health. They can be enjoyed as snacks, incorporated into bread and muffins, sprinkled into salads, and so much more.


Besides being an excellent source of protein, salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids that promote optimal cognitive reasoning and may even be instrumental in the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease. Salmon can be served grilled, poached, baked, or barbecued. Canned salmon can be used in the same ways that canned tuna is used — in casseroles, sandwiches, and salads.


As people age, their body’s need for calcium increases significantly. Just three glasses of skim milk per day will meet the calcium requirements of most seniors. Milk can also be used in baking, as a base for fruit smoothies, and in both hot and cold cereal.
